There are plenty of rumors, but no one knows why the founder of Original Tommy’s began slopping a heaping ladle of meaty chili on top of his cheeseburgers in 1946. Today, the highly caloric, very messy burger seems like the antithesis of Los Angeles, known in the public imagination for its obsession with health, or even its trendy, global food culture. But the chiliburger is woven into the fabric of LA’s humble food history, and this iconic institution is the only place to experience it. “We are…

American Eagle filed a lawsuit against the former owners of the Westfield San Francisco Centre mall this week, alleging the group mismanaged the building. The clothing retailer is claiming the company “neglected” its obligation to maintain the common areas of the mall, “allowing the mall to become a lightning rod for, in Westfield’s words, ‘rampant criminal activity.’” The lawsuit was first spotted by the San Francisco Business Times. The filing states that Westfield spent $2 billion on upgrades…

The reopening of the historic San Francisco Cliff House is still months away, but after the National Park Service announced new owners this week, more details have emerged about what’s in store for the new era of the building. That doesn’t include the name, though. The Cliff House was formerly operated by Mary and Dan Hountalas for over 40 years when it officially closed on Dec. 31, 2020. The Hountalases trademarked “Cliff House” during their tenure and reportedly are seeking a financial agreem…

When pet store owner John Chan posted on the site Nextdoor about selling his San Francisco shop for $0, he never expected the response he got. But more than 100 calls and emails later, he has found new owners for Chinatown’s Pet Central. “I found three young gentlemen that are perfectly fit. They have lots of energy. They are local,” Chan said. “The pet business needs new blood.” Chan said the new owners grew up in Chinatown and used to come into the store as kids. They’ve even purchased severa…

When rental prices dropped dramatically across the Bay Area during the pandemic, it was a welcome reprieve for renters. But that decline in prices has stayed stable much longer than many predicted — and it still may be one of the best times to rent in the Bay Area in years. A new report from the rental website Apartment List shows that rents in San Francisco were down more than 4% in August 2023, compared with the same time last year. Prices were also down in every Bay Area county, with the stee…

A notorious Berkeley home best known for hosting decades of hot tub parties just hit the market. Former owner Deward Hastings, who famously welcomed the public to his backyard hot tub, died in September 2022 doing what he loved best, hot tubbing, officials said at the time. Now, the administrator of his estate has put the bungalow at 2133 Essex St. up for sale for $899,000. Hastings purchased the property in 1969 and reportedly built the hot tub and began opening it to the public in 1975. In 200…

San Francisco’s office vacancy rate climbed even higher in the third quarter of 2023, according to new preliminary data recently released by commercial real estate firm CBRE. Office vacancy rose from 31.6% to 33.9%, a new record high for the city, which has hit record highs each quarter for nearly two years. This still likely isn’t the peak, though, as the city’s availability rate, which includes both vacant space and leases ending soon, has already hit 37.5%. Despite the grim numbers, experts s…

LATEST Oct. 2, 12:35 p.m. Marlowe co-owner James Nicholas told SFGATE he is in talks with the building’s landlord to figure out a plan in hopes of keeping the restaurant at its current site long-term. There are still six years left on its current lease. If construction takes longer than anticipated, the restaurant may consider a pop-up, and if no future agreement can be met, it will consider other locations. “What’s important to know is we are 100% committed to Marlowe having a long-term home in…

Anchor Brewing Company’s two-building property in San Francisco has officially hit the market. 495 and 501 De Haro Street total more than 100,000 square feet and are obviously most suited for another brewery to take over. But the zoning for the 2.17 acres allows for many uses in the industrial area, including research and development, storage, electric vehicle charging, and shipping logistics uses, according to CBRE, which is marketing the listing. It also includes laboratory uses, which could b…

San Francisco median home sale prices fell again in September, though the city was buoyed by more new listings coming to market than in any of the previous 12 months, according to a recent report from real estate firm Compass. The total number of new listings still remains extremely low by long-term historical standards, according to Compass analyst Patrick Carlisle, and when coupled with rising interest rates, that has continued to instill uncertainty in the market. September is typically a po…

Stanford Rosenthal left the Bay Area eight years ago for the reason many people leave — he wanted to buy a house. He returned to his hometown of New Orleans and purchased a duplex, something he said he never would have been able to do in San Francisco. But as we spoke in early October, he was on a cross-country drive back to San Francisco to start a new chapter in one of the places he said truly feels like home. His original reason for moving back to the city — helping to co-found a startup — h…
