Amateur Photographer magazine has published an interesting story about a copyright infringement case of similar, but not directly copied, images. The issue of copyright is thorny, contentious and often misunderstood but this case sheds some light on the current attitude of courts in the UK. Despite significant differences between the two images (there was no implication that the second image was a duplicate of the first), the court found that the second image copied substantially from the ’creat…

LaChapelle brought the case over apparent similarities between his photographs and aspects of the music video for Rihanna’s single ‘S&M.’ The ruling from a district court in New York, gives an interesting insight into which elements of an original photograph are protected under US copyright law. To complement this feature the company has launched two lenses with i-Fn buttons - the 20-50mm F3.5-…

The SD/IXUS range is made up of Canon’s ‘style-orientated’ compact cameras and, as the rest of the market has fragmented into innumerable niches, the range has grown to accommodate an increasing variety of needs. The SD4000 IS tops the current lineup, offering a 3.8x wide-angle zoom and (despite its underlying point-and-shoot disposition) aperture and shutter priority modes. In addition the SD4000 IS is the first of its family to be based around a back-lit CMOS sensor that enables several high s…

As DSLRs have become less expensive, the number of people keen to buy high-end, manually controllable compact cameras has fallen away - so long as camera size isn’t an issue, the benefits of a larger sensor are hard to resist. However, because size is a concern for some people, the sector didn’t die-off entirely and, in July 2008, Panasonic introduced the DMC-LX3, finally giving an alternative to Canon’s well-respected G-series.
